Asterism Adventure LED Astronomy Kit
Light up your classroom, and their imaginations, with our custom-designed LED circuit pack that is the perfect combination of astronomy, physics and history.
Use astronomy to increase your students’ confidence in electricity
The topic of electricity divides classes and teachers in a way akin to Marmite; some love it, some loathe it, and some even fear it. In contrast to this, many students are captivated by astronomy and the power it has to transport us to dream of distant worlds and exotic, alien objects. This kit combines astronomy with electricity to allow children to make connections and build trust in electricity, while learning about their local universe. It is great to see the glow on their faces as they build resilience and succeed.
SAFETY: COIN BATTERIES ARE USED IN THIS ACTIVITY
Help them make connections with their surroundings and subjects
An asterism is a section of a constellation that makes a distinctive pattern, and our chosen asterism for this kit is ‘The Plough’ in Ursa Major. The online resources provided guide you and your students through how stars in asterisms are at different distances and the light from them travels a long way to reach the Earth. We consider what big world events were happening when the light from ‘The Plough’ began its journey to us, and make deep connections between classroom topics of physics and history.
Recommended age for activity: Upper KS2 and KS3.
