Time Hop
Are you ready to look back in time?
Allow us to take your students on an adventure through time and space with our workshop, which is designed to get students questioning where they are in the universe. By looking at well-known star patterns in the night sky, we explore the scale of our local neighbourhood and the time it takes for light from stars to reach the Earth. As the glow on top of this experience, your students will build their very own light-up version of ‘The Plough’ asterism using resilience to master electricity!

Show your students the bigger picture
This workshop combines different disciplines to captivate students of all interests and abilities; it is a fusion of electricity, astronomy and British history. The beauty in this approach is that it engages all students, even those who don’t believe they like or can do ‘science’. It’s a crowd pleaser!

Workshop line up
We begin with an assembly all together, where your engaging workshop leader will drum up excitement and enquiry in the minds of your students. The presentation will be appropriately 40 minutes long and will include an interactive quiz, astronomy prizes and the chance for space questions to be answered.
In the second part of the workshop, the students use the components in their kits to make their glowing star pattern. Depending on the size of the group, your workshop leader will either lead the practical session in one room or, in the cases of larger groups, class teachers will play our custom-built instruction video to their classes to follow along to. The workshop leader will be circulating the classrooms helping and answering questions if there are several classes participating.

Lasting memories of their experience with Mission Astro
Our workshop is guaranteed to last more than just a day; the students can take home and keep their LED light-up asterisms and display them at home for years to come. They also receive a certificate and Mission Astro pin badge. Prizes will be given out during the workshop to activity winners. We often give out Legami Astronaut pens and copies of ‘Astrophysics for Supervillains’ by Dr Matt Bothwell. The QR code they receive in the workshop gives them and their parents access to more of our astronomy information and activities to do at home. We pride ourselves on taking our Mission Astro sparkle into as many homes as possible and creating opportunities for continuing learning at home.

Host Requirements
To deliver this workshop, we require a screen to project on and ample desk space for students to do their craft. This workshop requires the students to use a coin battery. We have a risk assessment in place for this activity. We have found this works best if the adults in the room supervise all children closely with the batteries and keep track of them. The more classroom assistants available to help with the batteries, the better the experience for the students.
