Stargazing Events In Hartley Wintney

We are hosting a series of unmissable stargazing evenings at the Lucy Pygott Centre in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. This venue offers superb views of the sky while escaping some of the light pollution in town. We look forward to showing you treasures above your head that you’ve not seen before.

What new discovery will you make with us this winter?

Mini Stargazers (Under 10)

Whatever the British weather brings, we are ready to whisk off our miniature sky explorers on a jam-packed space adventure! We’ll have a short space talk, a quiz, face painting and stargazing! Plan A is to be outside in the field using telescopes and binoculars to see the Moon, stars and planets. If our plot is foiled by thick cloud cover, we will retreat inside and explore the heavens digitally and do fun, interactive space activities. Each child ticket includes a space goodie bag.

Hot Choc Star Hop (10 and over)

Join Dr Sarah Crick and her team for a night of astronomy greatness! You will be treated to an entertaining astronomy talk delivered by Sarah on a hot topic in the space sector, then dazzled by the delights in the skies of Hartley Wintney through a telescope by Jordan from NOVA Stargazing. If the clouds blow in, you will be treated to a digital tour of the sky, a close up look at some HUGE telescopes and an astronomy quiz with an out-of-this-world prize for the victor!

All tickets include a hot chocolate, a space-themed cupcake and an entry into a prize draw to win a stargazing experience with NOVA Stargazing.

Interstellar Escape Plot

Sci-fi (and science) tells us that interstellar travel is possible, but what does it really take to get to the nearest star? Solar sails, antimatter rockets and miniature Suns, come and explore astronomy’s version of ‘Wacky Races’ and bet on your winner.

Hartley Wintney Event Information

The Lucy Pygott Centre
Vaughan Close
St Mary’s Park
Hartley Wintney
RG27 8EB

There is parking available onsite and also parking in visitors bays on the St. Mary’s Park estate.

Stargazing is on the field behind the pavilion. Contact [email protected] if you have specific requirements regarding access.

There are bathroom facilities on site.

The telescopes we use can easily see our moon and solar system planets, as well as deep space objects like galaxies, star clusters, and nebulae.

Please wrap up warm as we will be standing outside in the middle of winter. Do bring a red torch if you have one. (Can make one by putting red cellophane over a white torch if you are feeling creative.)

Please do not wear bright white head torches or use bright white lights while we are stargazing. It ruins the dark adaptation of everyone's eyes.

Last year, the event was all-in-one for all ages. This year, we have made a separate earlier session for our younger observers to better tie in with bedtime. All the talks are different from last year, so you are guaranteed to hear something new.

Yes, the more the merrier.

Children need to be accompanied by an adult.

The contents will be different each time, but examples of contents include stickers, stationery, inflated balloons, coloring sheets, fabric patches, word searches, etc.

Assistance dogs are welcome, but we are unable to accommodate pets.

Once you have booked your ticket, please contact us with your dietary requirements, and we will arrange to provide you with a drink and snack that is suitable for your needs.

NOVA Stargazing

We are partnering with NOVA Stargazing for our events. Jordan, the founder of NOVA, is an experienced stargazer and will be joining us for our three winter observing sessions, with his fleet of telescopes set on planets, star clusters, galaxies and nebulae.

Daleightful Bakes

Melissa’s cakes are famous locally and, in our humble opinion, the best in the Galaxy! At our events this year, we are proudly serving Melissa’s space-themed cake creations along with some delicious hot chocolate to warm us up on cold winter evenings.
