In a unique take on space exploration, this voyage across the Solar System is guaranteed to make your students look at their local universe differently. On this adventure, we leave Earth behind and go off in search of new discoveries on the icy Saturnian moon, Enceladus. Along the way, your students will create art to visualise the experience, use maths to consider the realities of the trip and utilise entertaining video techniques to present their extraterrestrial journey to their peers.
This workshop combines different disciplines to captivate students of all interests and abilities. It showcases the art involved in space exploration as well as the science. We use stop-motion animation to depict a journey through space and let creativity run wild about what we may encounter along the way.
With a Solar System quiz to begin, the students will be introduced to Enceladus. In groups, they will begin their adventure by analysing stats from modern rockets to choose the one they’d use for their trip; then, they will build their own individual rockets using our custom-built mosaic kits.
While the mosaics are drying, students will calculate the time it takes to reach their destination and what they will pass on the way. Using an artistic licence, they will make 2D models of the planets that they will pass on the journey.
With their rocket and models, they will use a video editing app to make their own short stop-motion film to document their bold adventure. We will then enjoy watching their creations and a winner will be selected for a prize.
We end our day with a certificate and pin badge presentation and, if the teachers dare, a round of our most popular game; ‘student vs teacher’ astronomy edition!
Our mosaic kits are made in collaboration with Mosaikit, a UK company owned by mosaic artist and published author Teresa Mills. With over 20 years experience in mosaicing, and a plethora of successful project work completed in schools, Teresa and her husband Paul have worked with us to develop a rocket to use in schools to inspire students to reach for the stars. With different stages, boosters, fairing and engines like today's modern in-service rockets, this mosaic is both beautiful and realistic.
Our workshop is guaranteed to last more than just a day; the students can take home and keep their mosaic rockets and display them at home (or in their classroom) for years to come. We often give out Legami Astronaut pens and copies of ‘Astrophysics for Supervillains’ by Dr Matt Bothwell. The QR code they receive gives them and their parents access to more of our astronomy information and activities to do at home. We pride ourselves on taking our Mission Astro sparkle into as many homes as possible and creating opportunities for lovely family moments.
To deliver this workshop, we require a screen to project on, ample desk space for students to do their craft, access to the internet and an iPad/tablet with a video editing app (for example, iMovie) installed per group. We will need calculators, scissors, glue sticks, glue spreaders, and coloured pencils if you have class sets. We will provide PVA glue and coloured paper.
