Our Mega Meteors workshop is a fusion of exciting astronomy, world geography, rock chemistry and mosaic art. We use a cross-curricular approach to maximise learning and enjoyment for teachers and students alike! With quizzes, mosaic construction and an interactive presentation from an expert astronomer, there’s never a dull moment on this Earth-shattering adventure.
This workshop combines different disciplines to captivate students of different interest and abilities. It showcases the art involved in space exploration as well as the science. We use interactive activities and hands-on tasks to explore space rocks and let your students creativity run wild about the different possibilities the universe has in store for its future.
The workshop begins with an interactive quiz (with prizes!) to get the students thinking about the places on Earth that have been affected by space rocks. Next, a lecture-style (yet very interactive) talk begins and lasts for approx. 40 mins. The experience involves student participation and thought.
In the second half of the workshop, the students will use the resources that we provide to make their own interpretation of a space rock entering the Earth’s atmosphere. We intertwine the science of the impact with art to create a memory for the children. The time that it takes for the students to finish their creation can vary wildly so we provide colouring sheets and puzzle sheets for early finishers.
The students are left with a lasting impression of their experience as they are able to take home their creation (they are excellent bedroom decorations and Christmas tree ornaments) as well as a QR code with links to online activities they can complete with their parents at home.

This workshop was created as part of a Grant project won by Mission Astro and Mosaikit funded by the Royal Astronomical Society. All of the funded places are filled however each school that is part of this workshop will still receive the teacher resources for Year 5 space and, subject to time availability of the astro speaker, some schools may be offered a free talk for their infant school children about space. This talk must be completed in the same visit as the workshop.
Love our mosaics and want to use them as a stand alone class activity or with an organised group?
Our workshop is guaranteed to last more than just a day; the students can take home and keep their mosaic meteors and display them at home (or in their classroom) for years to come. We often give out Legami Astronaut pens and copies of ‘Astrophysics for Supervillains’ by Dr Matt Bothwell. The QR code they receive gives them and their parents access to more of our astronomy information and activities to do at home. We pride ourselves on taking our Mission Astro sparkle into as many homes as possible and creating opportunities for lovely family moments.
To deliver this workshop, we require a screen to project on, ample desk space for students to do their craft, access to the internet and an iPad/tablet with a video editing app (for example, iMovie) installed per group. We will need calculators, scissors, glue sticks, glue spreaders, and coloured pencils if you have class sets. We will provide PVA glue and coloured paper.
To book us for your school or ask us a question about this experience, fill out our enquiry form and we’ll get back to you within 2 working days.
